Advancing the Gospel Among the Nations

The Navigators is a ministry that shares the gospel of Jesus and helps people grow in their relationship with Him through life-on-life discipleship, creating spiritual generations of believers. Since its founding in 1933, The Navigators has upheld the mission “to know Christ, make Him known, and help others do the same®.

Our History

Through authentic relationships, Navigators focus on life-to-life discipleship, deep engagement with the Scriptures, and equipping leaders to develop future generations of Christ-followers.

The Navigators is a Worldwide Partnership, a multinational team working to advance the Gospel of Jesus and His kingdom in more than 100 nations.

Founded in the 1930s, The Navigators is led by the International Executive Team (IET). Joe Maschhoff currently serves as international president. The IET collaborates with seven regional directors who provide support and guidance to men and women ministering in diverse ways around the world.

The International Headquarters of The Navigators is based in Colorado Springs, where the U.S. Navigators is also based.

Our Calling

To advance the Gospel of Jesus and His Kingdom
into the nations
through spiritual generations of laborers
living and discipling among the lost

Our Core Values

  • The passion to know, love, and become like Jesus Christ
  • The truth and sufficiency of the Scriptures for the whole of life
  • The transforming power of the Gospel
  • The leading and empowering of the Holy Spirit
  • Expectant faith and persevering prayer rooted in the promises of God
  • The dignity and value of every person
  • Love and grace expressed among us in community
  • Families and relational networks in discipling the nations
  • Interdependent relationships in the Body of Christ in advancing the Gospel

Our Vision

We see a vital movement of the Gospel, fueled by prevailing prayer, flowing freely through relational networks and out into the nations. Workers for the Kingdom are next door to everywhere!

What characterizes this movement? A heart for the whole person, climates of grace, compassion for the vulnerable and broken, sacrificial unity embracing diversity, cultural relevance and sensitivity, interdependence with others in the wider family of God, transformed men and women, fragrant with humility and the aroma of Christ.

They are marked by a deep engagement with and obedience to the Scriptures as the Word of God. They believe the promises of God. Both personally and in committed communities, they seek to know and pursue the purposes of God.

Laborers and leaders are emerging, with an increasing passion for Jesus Christ. They demonstrate faith and courage as they live and move among their friends and families. As spiritual parents, they model authenticity and relevance.

Ordinary people, in many walks of life, are joyfully leading integrated lives. They live as fruitful insiders among the lost. There is perseverance in the face of hardship and suffering. Around the world, many are coming to faith. As they become established in discipleship, some grow to be foundational for further generations. The gospel spreads naturally and powerfully, as believers share Christ, life upon life, family to family.

Crossing cultures into new cities and nations, teams of mobile pioneers intentionally proclaim and embody the Good News of Jesus Christ, in such a way that transformed communities multiply. These communities are bringing joy and hope to their surrounding environments as relationships are healed and justice increases. Indeed, the lost and unreached burn in their hearts, as they move the gospel into the nations.

The leaders of this movement, developed and empowered for God’s service, live out a growing commitment to Christlikeness. They are dependent upon the Holy Spirit. New generations of leaders are emerging, rooted incarnationally in their local and national contexts. An international leadership community brings focus, alignment, and energy to their movement. These leaders are clearly committed to long-term impact in generational ministry.

“Soul winners are not soul winners because of what they know, but because of Who they know, and how well they know Him, and how much they long for others to know Him.”

DAWSON TROTMAN

Founder of the Navigators

European Regional Team

Bernard Dishman

REGIONAL DIRECTOR

Bernard is married to Deb, and together they have ministered with the Navigators for over 20 years. They met each other and the Navigators as students, have four lovely children, and are based in Leicester, where they enjoy being walked by their dog Sebby and looking after their grandkids. Bernard became the Regional Director in 2023 after many years of working with student ministry locally, nationally, and leading the European Student Network. He is passionate about sharing how the Gospel of Jesus can meet the very real needs that people today are experiencing, and inviting people into a life-changing vision. He also loves running extremely long races up and down mountains around the UK and Europe.

Claudia Ackers

Claudia has a passion for seeing people become whole and deeply connected with each other in Jesus. For 20 years, she worked among university students in Germany, shoulder to shoulder with her husband Daniel, who is now the German country leader for the Navigators. They love to gather people at their dining table in Hannover, sharing hearts and worldviews, good food and good coffee. Claudia has been part of the ERT since 2021, with a focus on developing synergies and an evercloser regional community in NavEurope.

Tim Forester

Tim lives in the UK with his wife Annie, a medical doctor. He met Jesus through the Navigators during his first year at university in New Zealand, where he originally comes from. Together, Tim and Annie ministered in East Africa for 17 years before settling in Manchester. They have two children, aged 23 and 21, both born in Tanzania. Tim and Annie share a deep desire to help people encounter the living God. Tim joined the Europe Regional Team in 2023, where he has a special focus on supporting the NavEurope networks.

Jaap Korving

Jaap and his wife Lauri got involved with the Navigators a few years after they graduated. As they were searching for God’s guidance, it became very clear to them that this was the spiritual family they wanted to be part of. They spent 10 years serving in France, first in Strasbourg and then in Tours. When they returned to the Netherlands with his family, he continued his passion for missions and now leads the International Missions Team for the Navigators in Europe. They have two sons and two daughters, and still love spending time in France as a family.

Ramin Djamschidi

Ramin grew up in the Middle East but has lived in Germany for 40 years now. Together with his wife, Manu, they represent 6 nations. He is vividly passionate about finding and forming life-long labourers around Europe while cheering them on to abide in the Vine (John 15). He is the voice for smaller and pioneering ministries in Europe and praises the Lord contagiously when he sees them grow. He is not only eager to see the next spiritual generation around Europe, but also at home! He is an immensely thankful father with three wonderful teens.

Mark Newell

Mark grew up in the USA and felt God’s call to join the Navigators in Hungary. He and his wife, Laura, left their family and friends and now minister in Budapest, where he serves as national director, and enjoys being among students through teaching part-time at a local university. Both are passionate about making disciples for Jesus, and their doors are always open for visitors. Mark serves on the Europe Regional Team, supporting and encouraging pioneering countries in our region.

Ole Andreas Olafsrud

Ole Andreas lives in Oslo, Norway with Solveig and their three kids. He’s been around the Navigators his whole life, growing up in a Navigator family. He was involved in the youth ministry growing up and started as part-time staff in 2007 focusing on youth and later students. He’s had different roles with the Navigators in Norway, spent some time with the Navigators in the US, and also led the European Student Network for the last couple of years. He now works as the regional operations manager to support the regional team and ongoing processes in NavEurope.

Navigators European Board

Frank Schlichtenbrede

Board Chair

I came to know Christ in my early twenties, alongside my then future wife Katja. We joined the local Nav student group and stuck around ever since. We benefitted a lot through personal discipleship, training, and leadership experiences. Later, we helped start a new student group in another town and continued serving in various roles – locally, nationally, and across Europe as CIPs (Conventional Income People). We now live in Heidelberg with our three kids (two studying), enjoying the outdoors, rusty cars, and deep, life – changing conversations. I’m also an ophthalmologist, and my favorite part of the job is helping people see – literally and spiritually.

Simon Wroe

Trustee UK

I came to faith through the Navigators as a student in Cardiff in 1976. After postgraduate studies, I spent 2.5 years in India before joining the Nav team back in Cardiff, where I met Anne who had just arrived as a Navigator Rep. We married in 1986 and started a student ministry in Swansea. Later, I served as National Administrator for the Navigators, which took us to Southampton. From 2002, I worked in training and development until taking voluntary redundancy in 2014. I enjoy gardening, running, and museums. Anne passed away in 2024. I have two married children, both active in their churches.

Elise Angen

Independent trustee

I got to know the Navigators when studying in Bergen. After that I have continued to be active through the national board and the general assembly    in addition to keeping a lot of those important friendships and approaches to a practical faith throughout life. I live in Oslo, Norway’s capital, a city with nature and culture close at hand. It’s easy to get around, and the surrounding forests, hills, and fjord offer year- round access to the outdoors. Oslo is also a great base for exploring further whenever the travel bug bites.

Hannah Jaeschke

Independent Trustee

I came to faith in 2003 at age 19 while singing Blessed Be Your Namea moment of clarity about God’s sovereignty that changed everything. I met the Navigators in Bonn in 2005 and stayed connected with the German Navs until our move to Northern Ireland in 2023. I’m married to Philipp, and we have three wonderful children. We live in Belfast, a friendly city with plenty to doeven in the rain! I work with children with special educational needs in a mainstream school. It’s deeply rewarding to see them grow, even when all I can do is pray.

Beth Yearsley

Independent trustee, Secretary

I came to faith at 17 while still in school and connected with the Navigators in 2008 through Tim – now my husband – who invited me to a Bible study. I have been on the Board for 4 years, and I work full time as a Director at one of the largest Student Unions in the UK. I live in Nottingham and my passion is living and discipling among the lost. I am a leader in local musical theatre and in my “spare” time I play bass and sing in a country band and train for hybrid races (running and weight lifting).

Magnus Halling

Trustee Sweden

I came to faith at 21 during my first year at university through the Navigators in Uppsala, and have been connected ever since. My most recent active period began in 2017, serving as a trustee and chairman of the board. Now retired since 2022, I have more freedom to focus on what’s meaningful. I live in Uppsala, Sweden – a city rich in culture, great food, and close to Stockholm. I’m married with three grown children and four grandchildren. I enjoy model and real trains, Christian pop music, and stories of hope – like The Shawshank Redemption.

Nicolas Guerineau

Trustee France

I come from the heart of France and grew up in a non-Christian family. I became a believer through the Navigators during my engineering studies in Orsay, south of Paris—thanks to an American missionary who knocked on my student room door. That encounter began a chain of Bible studies that continues more than 30 years later. I’ve stayed involved with the Navigators, joining the board in 2019 and serving as president since 2021. I work in physics research and enjoy Bible discussions, choral singing, hiking, and cycling. My passion is sharing the gospel with students far from Christian circles.

Cees Hordijk

Independent trustee, treasurer

I met Jesus at a Youth for Christ meeting in 1970, a turning point in my life. As a teenager in the Netherlands, my brother introduced me to the Navigators through campus prayer meetings in Delft, and as a student I joined the ministry in Amsterdam. Since 2014, I’ve served on the European board – first as chair of the Dutch board and now as treasurer. Heidi and I are blessed with four children and four grandchildren. I love supporting ministries creatively and strategically, and enjoy sports, reading, problem-solving, and drumming – along with jazz and classical music.

Sijtze Brandsma

Trustee Netherlands

I came to faith at 17 and joined the Navigators in Amsterdam in 1979, where I also met my future wife, Benita. We married in 1986 and have three children who are also following Jesus. I served on the Dutch Board in the 1990s and later as Chair from 2018 until last year, when I handed over to Ronald van der Meer. I now continue as the Dutch representative on the European Board. Professionally, I’ve worked internationally in the food Industry and, for the past decade, in the cooperative energy sector. I love outdoor activities, Jazz music, reading and cooking for others.

Daniel Laco

Trustee Slovakia

I came to personal faith in my teens, shaped by underground Navigators discipleship groups in the 1980s. I live in Bratislava, Slovakia, and I’m married to Mirka; we have three adult children. After Slovakia was freed from communist rule, I served as D3-Navigators country leader, became active in business, and helped develop Christian schools for secular families. I co-founded the company For Business Excellence and chair the Association of C. S. Lewis Schools. Guided by mentor Milan Cicel, I believe the gospel should be lived and embodied in today’s “ecclesias,” such as businesses and schools. I enjoy biking and skiing.

Marianne Iversen

Trustee Norway

I came to faith in my teens and got to love the Bible as a student in a Navigator Bible study group. Later, I married Lars, and we’re adoptive parents to two adult children. We live south of Oslo. For the past five years, I’ve served as board chair for the Navigators in Norway. My passion is building trust and finding ways through challenges together with others. I work as a gestalt psychotherapist and love it. In my free time, I enjoy playing the flute in a band, hiking in the forest, and reading a good book makes me happy!

Christian Brenner

Trustee Germany

I came to faith as a child, with a renewed commitment as a teenager. I’ve been connected with the Navigators since 1994 and joined the German Board in 2013. I live in Schorndorf, Germany, with my wife, and we have four grown-up children. I work in a Christian publishing group, where I love helping people share how Christ is working in their lives, and making those stories accessible to a wider audience. Field and publishing ministry go hand in hand as we support individuals and churches in living out their faith and bringing the gospel to the world. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, diving into deep conversations, and exploring God’s wonderful creation.
